Confidence Building: How to Overcome Shyness
Shyness is something we all experience at one point or another. We all have confidence issues from time to time, especially if we put pressure on ourselves to get something done or to talk to someone, but what’s important is that we learn how to deal with these issues and overcome our shyness.
Here are a few tips you can apply whenever you feel like your shyness is getting the best of you.
1. Act Confidently Even if You Don’t Feel Like It
Confidence, contrary to what you may think, takes action, practice and learning. It doesn’t come naturally because it has to be based on experience, it has to be based on the knowledge that you can do the things you want to do. All things are scary at first, but once you dare to go for it, and you succeed, you can’t even remember what you were so scared of in the first place. That applies to social confidence as well. The trick is to act confident from the start; anxiety is normal, but you shouldn’t avoid every situation that makes you feel that way. If you do, you will miss out on a lot.
2. Engage With Others
Overcoming social anxiety takes practice, so if you have trouble approaching people, you have to make it a part of everyday life. Engage with others at every chance you get, whether that’s participating in small talk with strangers, co-workers and the person you like but are too afraid to reach out to.
Talk to people more often and share your thoughts and opinions; you’ll find that people want to hear from you and get to know you. Take more chances with people, go on that date, talk to that friendly-looking stranger at the gym, the store, or some event. Life is too short to lock yourself inside of yourself!
3. Try New Things
Trying new things and exposing yourself to new experiences is one of the best ways to overcome your shyness one step at a time. Join a club, start a course, try an improv class, volunteer somewhere, tackle a challenging task at work, start a new hobby; just pick a new project and invest yourself in it. You’ll find like-minded people to share your passions with in the process, but you’ll also get out of your comfort zone.
4. Work on Your Body Language
Shy people are always trying to make themselves small and invisible, so much so that they sacrifice their personality and the things that make them unique. This is a big mistake! Start by working on your body language; something as simple as walking straight, holding your head high, smiling, speaking clearly, and making eye contact can make a huge difference in your attitude.
5. Speak Your Mind
Another thing you should do everyday is speaking your mind! The more you share your thoughts and feelings, the more you’ll see that they have value, not just to yourself, but to the people around you.
